Why Ages 7-11?

Why We Treat Children Early

The British Orthodontic Society recommends assessment between ages 7-11 because this is when we can make the biggest difference.

Prevent future complications - detect and fix issues before they worsen, reducing the cost or need for treatment in teenage years

Reduce the chance of dental trauma - teeth that jut out are more likely to be injured in an accident

Guide proper jaw development - while your child's jaw is still growing, it's easier to achieve a balanced profile and functional bite

Build proper oral hygiene habits - we teach your child the importance of looking after their oral health from a young age

Prevent tooth decay - straight teeth are easier to keep clean, reducing cavities and plaque build-up

Tired of NHS waiting lists? We offer appointments within weeks, not years.

Growth Appliances

Growth appliances are specialised devices used during childhood when the jaw is still developing. Unlike braces that move teeth, these appliances guide the growth of the jaw itself - something that's only possible while your child is still growing.

By influencing how the upper and lower jaws develop, we can correct bite problems, create space for adult teeth and often prevent the need for more complex treatment (including jaw surgery) later in life.

Common growth appliances include:

Palatal expanders

Widen a narrow upper jaw to create space and improve bite

Twin block appliances

Encourage lower jaw growth to correct an overbite

Headgear

Restrain upper jaw growth or guide molars into position

Space maintainers

Hold space for adult teeth after early loss of baby teeth

Invisalign First

Clear aligners designed specifically for growing children aged 6-10

Angel Aligner KiD

Removable aligners with built-in guides to correct early issues, support jaw growth and direct permanent teeth into position

Fixed Braces

Fixed Braces

Small brackets and wires that gently guide teeth and jaw development. The most effective option for growing children.

Common Questions

Parents Ask Us...

The British Orthodontic Society recommends children have an orthodontic assessment between ages 7-11. At this stage, we can identify developing issues while your child's jaw is still growing, making treatment more effective.

Not necessarily. Many children we see don't need immediate treatment - we're simply monitoring their development. If we spot an issue, early intervention can prevent it becoming more serious. We'll always give you honest advice about the best timing.

Interceptive orthodontics means treating developing problems in younger children, typically when the patient has a mixture of adult and baby teeth, before they become more complex. By guiding tooth and jaw growth early, we can often simplify or even eliminate the need for extensive treatment later.

Sometimes early treatment is a two-phase approach - some correction now, then a shorter phase later once all adult teeth have come through. However, early treatment often reduces or simplifies teenage treatment significantly.

We take great care to make treatment as comfortable as possible. Children may feel some pressure when braces are adjusted, but this is temporary. Most children adapt quickly and don't find treatment painful.

As parents ourselves, we appreciate how busy it is to fit everything in. Parents download our app and take weekly photos of their child's teeth. Our team reviews the images and sends updates, meaning fewer trips to the practice. Children often enjoy the process and parents love the convenience.
