Getting a good night’s sleep doesn’t need to be a dream

Do you lie awake at night because of your partner’s snoring? Or worse, are you the one interrupting sleep in your home? It may comfort you to know that snoring affects around 1 in 10 people. Even better, we can put an end to the snoring and give you a good night’s sleep.

The cause of snoring

Snoring is caused by vibration of the soft tissues in your head and neck as you breathe. Some people that snore may suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). This is where the airways become partially or totally blocked for about 10 seconds.

A fall in the level of oxygen to the brain causes the sufferer to move into a light state of sleep, or even wake for a short period, in order to restore normal breathing. This can occur throughout the night, resulting in a poor night's sleep and daytime sleepiness. It is also associated with a number of general health problems including high blood pressure.

Treatment for sleep apnoea

If you are experiencing excessive tiredness, your GP may be able to conduct an overnight sleep study to diagnose OSA. After you’ve received an official diagnosis, a treatment can be prescribed. This may include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or a mandibular advancement appliance (MAA).

MAAs work by bringing the lower jaw and the tongue forward, allowing an open airway to be maintained. They can be used in the treatment of snoring and for mild to moderate OSA. It is recommended that a MAA is made specifically for you by an orthodontist using impressions or a digital scan of your teeth and jaw.
