Getting a good night’s sleep
Do you lie awake because of your partner’s snoring? Do you wake yourself up with your own snoring? Snoring affects around 1 in 10 people but at Orthodontic Excellence we can put an end to it and give you a good night’s sleep.
Snoring is caused by vibration of the soft tissues in your head and neck as you breathe. Some people with snoring may also suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). This is where the airways become partially or totally blocked for about 10 seconds. A fall in the level of oxygen to the brain, causes the sufferer to move into a light state of sleep, or even wake for a short period, in order to restore normal breathing. This can occur throughout the night, resulting in a poor night's sleep and daytime sleepiness. This may have an adverse impact on day-to-day activities and is associated with a number of general health problems including high blood pressure.
Visit your GP for advice regarding snoring, particularly if you feel excessively tired during the day. An overnight sleep study can diagnose OSA and treatment can be prescribed. This may include CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) or a mandibular advancement appliance (MAA). MAAs work by bringing the lower jaw and the tongue forward, thus allowing an open airway to be maintained. They can be used in the treatment of snoring and for mild to moderate OSA.
It is recommended that, particularly if your snoring is associated with breathing difficulties, such as sleep apnoea, that a MAA is made specifically for you by a dental specialist (orthodontist) using impressions or a digital scan of your teeth and jaw.
